Germany’s biggest airline in Spain, Air Berlin, said Thursday Joachim Hunold plans to quit as CEO after it announced plans to chop routes amid losses that it blamed on new aviation tax, high fuel prices, and sagging demand for travel to North Africa.
Hunold, who works for Air Berlin since 1991, plans to offer his resignation next september, Air Berlin said. He recommended that Hartmut Mehdorn, a former chief executive of Germany’s national railway, become his interim successor.
Air Berlin announced Hunold’s departure shortly after it released weak second-quarter results and disclosed a program of cutbacks.
The airline said that their operations will be concentrated in hubs like Berlin, Palma de Majorca and Vienna.
